Dim
Dim is a Brooklyn, New York–based tattoo artist and graphic designer. Born in Seoul and raised in Korea, he spent much of his teenage years studying in China. He studied sculpture at Tsinghua University in Beijing before leaving the program and returning to Korea, where he majored in visual communication design at Seoul National University.
Self-taught in tattooing since 2015, he is currently a resident artist at Monolith Studio in Brooklyn. He is known for realistic and micro-realistic tattoo work centered on pets and animals, especially dogs and cats. In 2025, he was featured as one of the Best Tattoo Artists in New York by Ink on Sky Magazine.
Dim’s work does not stop at simply transferring a photograph onto the skin. He begins by understanding the structure of bone, muscle, and skin, then builds the image layer by layer. Rather than staying within straightforward representation, he reinterprets and reconstructs the image to reveal the subject’s presence and character with greater sensitivity.
Alongside tattooing, he continues to work across print, sculpture, and drawing. More recently, he has been experimenting with extending the tattoo machine beyond the skin by inscribing marks onto acrylic and polyester plates and developing them into print-based works. Through this process, he explores how images change and are recorded across different surfaces and material processes.
In 2020, he completed an internship with the design team at Naver. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Milan Design Week–SaloneSatellite, Beijing Design Walk 2018, and the International Media Design Exhibition. He has also worked as a guest artist at studios in cities including New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Boston, San Francisco, Toronto, Paris, London, Berlin, Rome, Singapore, and Taichung.
In 2019, he founded the independent publishing imprint Gin Junhyeong and, in the same year, published Tattoo Note with support from Dr. Cho Myung-Shin.

Dim의 작업은 단순히 사진을 그대로 옮기는 방식에 머물지 않는다. 그는 먼저 뼈, 근육, 피부의 구조를 이해한 뒤, 이를 층층이 쌓아가며 이미지를 구축한다. 그는 단순한 재현에 머물기보다, 이미지를 다시 해석하고 재구성하는 과정을 통해 대상의 인상과 감각을 더 섬세하게 드러낸다.
타투 작업과 함께 그는 인쇄, 조형, 드로잉 등 다양한 방식으로 이미지를 다루는 작업도 이어가고 있다. 최근에는 타투머신을 피부 위의 도구에만 한정하지 않고, 아크릴이나 폴리에스터 플레이트 위에 흔적을 새기고 이를 인쇄로 확장하는 실험을 진행하고 있다. 이를 통해 이미지가 서로 다른 표면과 과정 속에서 어떻게 달라지고 기록되는지 탐구하고 있다.
2020년에는 네이버 디자인팀에서 인턴십을 수행했으며, Milan Design Week–SaloneSatellite, Beijing Design Walk 2018, International Media Design Exhibition 등 국내외 전시에 참여했다. 또한 뉴욕, 마이애미, 로스앤젤레스, 워싱턴 D.C., 보스턴, 샌프란시스코, 토론토, 파리, 런던, 베를린, 로마, 싱가포르, 타이중 등 여러 도시의 스튜디오에서 게스트 아티스트로 작업해 왔다.
2019년에는 1인 출판사 ‘긴준형’을 설립했으며, 같은 해 조명신 박사의 후원으로 Tattoo Note를 출간했다.
